The Jewish comedian released her new stand-up special on Netflix to rough feedback

Amy Schumer is a star — but she hasn’t been getting many for her latest stand-up comedy special, “The Leather Special.” However, the Jewish comedian’s lack of positive reviews may not be the reflection of weak material but rather the efforts of a misplaced political agenda.

Schumer’s new one-hour special debuted on Netflix last week and was soon seeing a multitude of one-star reviews. A recent count revealed that of the 876 reviews, 710 had a single star.

At first, visitors of the streaming site might interpret Schumer’s low grade to be a sign that the  35-year-old may be losing her comedic footing. But another theory is that her ratings are being flooded by Internet trolls. Specifically, the alt-right.

In a recent Instagram post, the “Trainwreck” star wrote, “The alt right organized trolls to attack everything I do. They organize to get my ratings down. Meeting in sub Reddit rooms. They tried on my book and movies and tv show.”

Schumer is referring to alt-right domains like “The _Donald” that live on Reddit, according to Splitsider.  Accounts with an anti-Schumer angle are posting comments encouraging people to leave bad reviews: “please go and one-star that piece of sh—” and “you know what to do, folks.”

The disdain for Schumer’s special seems to be more of a disdain for Schumer (many of those leaving the single-star reviews didn’t even watch the show, according to Splitsider.) Some theories why denizens of the alt-right might not be the “Snatch” star’s biggest fans: She’s a powerful, outspoken woman, she’s liberal in causes such as abortion and gun control, she’s been vocal about her dislike of Trump’s policies (she spoke out against his immigration ban at the Women’s March in D.C.) and she doesn’t look like Ivanka — and she’s Jewish.

Following the recent plummet in its ratings, Netflix has announced that it is bidding adieu to the five-star rating system, on the basis that the format is outdated. Instead, the company will be using a thumbs-up, thumbs-down format.

Rather than lose heart about the lack of stars, Schumer posted that she feels empowered by the negative reviews.

“I want to thank the trolls. It makes me feel so powerful and dangerous and brave. It reminds me what I’m saying is effective and brings more interest to my work, and that their obsession with me keeps me going.”
