Peta Murgatroyd and Maks Chmerkovskiy announce their return to the popular competition show after having their first baby
For most new parents, the first few months after having a baby are spent wading through diapers and enduring sleepless nights. For Peta Murgatroyd and Maks Chmerkovskiy, the first few weeks following the birth of their first son meant training vigorously for “Dancing with the Stars.”
Murgatroyd, 30, and Chmerkovskiy, 37, have a few things in common: the engaged couple are new parents to baby Shai, they are professional dancers, and they will be gunning after the same trophy in season 24 of the hit televised dancing competition. They say children of talented parents can be held to the standard to follow in their footsteps, and in Shai’s case — the message can be taken quite literally … Some might even expect his first steps to be salsa or the rumba.
Chmerkovskiy, an MOT, whose first name Maks, is short for Maksim, means “enchanting” or “attractive” in Hebrew, but is often used as slang for “wonderful” or “amazing.” The Jewish dance star first took the “DWTS” stage in season two, and has since participated in 16 seasons. His first time taking the title was in 2014, which was season 18 (a little fortune from the lucky Hebrew number perhaps?)
Regardless of superstition, Chmerkovskiy feels confident about his return. “I’m also not at all afraid of this one, because I don’t know if everybody remembers the history, but the last time we were together on the same season, I won,” said Chmerkovskiy in the couple’s announcement of their return on “Good Morning America.”
As far as the new mother, Murgatroyd is eager to dance again. “It’s been some time, I’m definitely a little bit nervous, but I’m very excited to get back. I’ve definitely missed the dance floor,” said Murgatroyd on the morning show, who won the trophy two years ago with her partner Nyle DiMarco.
Chmerkovskiy’s past dance partners on the show have included MOTs Melissa Gilbert and Debi Mazar. The new celebrities joining the upcomming season will be revealed on March 1st on “Good Morning America.” (Can we all cross our fingers that one of them will be Larry David?)
Like a good Jewish papa Chmerkovskiy is not elated about being separated from his new bundle of joy. “This is the only difficult part about coming back on the show this time because it will take away from being with this dude,” he said but then made light of the impending separation by saying, “…but like I said I just want to make her [Murgatroyd] coming back and winning as difficult as possible.”
What a mensch.
