Acclaimed biographer of Stefan Zweig ("The Impossible Exile") George Prochnik presents his compelling new biography of the esteemed Kabbalistic scholar and self-described “religious anarchist” Gershom Scholem. Relying on equal parts history and mythos, "Stranger in a Strange Land" follows Scholem on his path from Berlin to Israel, from socialism to Zionism, bringing to life a long-overlooked but indispensable intellectual and religious figure and adding new depth to our understanding of Scholem’s story and influence, the birth of Israel, Palestine, and the evolution of humanist thought. Prochnik discusses his work with essayist Jia Tolentino, a contributing writer for newyorker.com, followed by a wine reception to celebrate the book's launch.
